2018 “Chinese Bridge” Dubbing Contest of Chinese Proficiency

     On December 21st, the 2018 “Chinese Bridge” Dubbing Contest of Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners across the Globe was held at Confucius Institute Headquarter. The contest lasted three months and attracted 198 contestants from 50 countries and 31 universities, with 262 contestants. Qu Jingguo, a prominent dubbing actor, Le Qi, Associate Professor of Communication University of China, and Zhu Yijing, a bilingual host of China Beijing TV Station were judges. The jury rated the performance according to four criteria, including the difficulty of the film selected by the contestant, pronunciation and intonation of the contestant, the expressiveness and the innovation of the work. Finally, Egyptian contestant Wei Qi, selected by Beijing Language and Culture University, won the gold medal in this dubbing contest.
     Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarter and Deputy Director-General of Hanban, Zhang Gaoli, President of the China Translation Publishing House, Ding Qiao, the programme producer of CCTV, Qiang Wei, Principal for the translation machine of the Beijing branch of iFLYTEK, heads of the partner institutions of Confucius Institutes such as Communication University of China, China University of Petroleum-Beijing, Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing Language and Culture University, directors of relevant offices of the headquarter, as well as more than 100 foreign students in Beijing and members of the “Chinese Bridge” club attended the event.
     The award ceremony was hosted by Han Jia, the host of CCTV, and David Kolosov, the champion of the 2014 “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreigners across the Globe. At the ceremony, representatives of foreign students performed the song and dance “Edelweiss” and the semi-chorus “Fly Higher”, the famous dubbing actor Qu Jingguo and contestants gave a dub performance of “Titanic” together, and the foreign host Anzelika Smirnova and David Kolosov gave a dub performance of excerpts from “Office Romance”, presenting a wonderful picture of language and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
     One gold medal, three silver medals, ten bronze medals, one Best Performance award, one Best Popularity award and five Excellent Organization awards were presented on the spot. When watching the prize-winning works, the audience followed the mood of the dubbing actors, felt the emotions of different roles, and praised the contestants' vivid performance.
     Amid the familiar music of the “Chinese Bridge”, the award ceremony of the dubbing contest dropped the curtain. The contestants all said that the dubbing contest has injected a lot of fun into Chinese studies, enabling them to better understand Chinese culture and at the same time make friends from around the world. As the judges commented, “Thanks to the dubbing contest, these excellent Chinese films and TV works have been discovered, disseminated and recognized all over the world.
