Thoughts of Chinese Students and Scholars in South Africa on

After the reply letter from Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of China and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission to Chinese overseas students of Moscow State University got reported, the Education Office of the Chinese Embassy in South Africa immediately reposted the letter and relevant reports to organizations of Chinese overseas students, the Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms in South Africa. A learning fever started among overseas students and teachers while various learning activities and exchanges were carried out in South Africa.

Overseas students thanked the General Secretary and the CPC Central Committee for their care, and expressed their determination to study hard and promote the “Belt and Road” initiative and people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and the outside world with full enthusiasm. They also determined to do their part in the realization of the Chinese Dream and a community of shared future for mankind with full enthusiasm, living up to their motherland’s expectations.

Teachers and students from the Association of Chinese Students and Scholars in Western Cape, South Africa expressed that as the young generation living in the new era, they must have the courage to take any challenge with composure in the face of difficulties and make progress after overcoming these difficulties. They must also take the historical responsibilities entrusted by the times.

Dr. Ma Xuesheng from the Department of Chinese Medicine at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa, said that the stronger China creates historic opportunities for the spreading and development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) overseas. The reply letter from General Secretary Xi Jinping gives us confidence and courage. In 2018, they will roll up their sleeves to work harder and cultivate more high-level professionals of traditional Chinese medicine by vigorously promoting TCM and its culture in South Africa.

Yu Derong, a student from Hong Kong studying physiotherapy said he was honored to read the letter to Chinese students in Moscow. Although in South Africa, he has been keeping a close eye on all kinds of information about China. He expressed wishes for a more prosperous China and more stable development of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Professor Yan Bingwen from the Mathematics Department of Cape Peninsula University of Technology mentioned that as an experienced overseas student who has studied and worked abroad for many years, he can still feel the care from China and witness its strength despite long distance. More than one decade abroad, he has been in contact with major research institutions and universities in China and working hard to build a bridge for academic collaboration between China and South Africa.

Li Yuetong, President of the Asian Students’ Association of Stellenbosch University in South Africa, said that during her overseas study, she studied hard and kept strict with herself so that she could achieve her goals at an early date after she returned to China. Now, as the president of the Asian Students’ Association, she will do her utmost to help her classmates exchange their cultures and learn from each other, thereby jointly creating a wonderful life abroad.

Li Xiaoyan, Chinese Director of Confucius Classroom at the Chinese Culture and International Exchange Center of South Africa, said that the reply letter from Secretary General Xi Jinping conveys his emphasis on education, recognition of studying and working abroad and expectations for young students, especially the overseas students, who serve as the driving force for educators, especially the front-line staff teaching abroad. They will make full use of the stage provided by China and continue to explore new fields, so as to make the Confucius Classroom a major front for promoting the study of Chinese language and culture in South Africa and an important platform for people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries.

Jin Yu, a Chinese teacher of a Confucius Classroom also expressed that as a young teacher in the new era, she will stick to her faith and big ambitions with a down-to-earth spirit, taking “Never forget why you started, and your mission can be accomplished” as her motto and make the solemn commitment to “teaching knowledge and cultivating people”, so that she can realize the Chinese Dream.

Chinese teacher Fei Qingming mentioned that the reply letter is a great encouragement to them, making them feel that the goal is clearer, their responsibility greater and every step has to be firmer. In the future, they will undertake tasks with higher spirits and advance towards longer-term goals.

Yue Lei said that as a teacher dispatched by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) to the Confucius Classroom of South Africa, he always closely combines individual prospects with the development of the times. He will internalize the spirit of this reply letter in the mind and apply it to practical actions so that he can make decisions worthy of the youth and the times and continuously contribute his energy to the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Chinese volunteers Liu Yafen, Jin Xinyu and Lu Shanshan also expressed their gratitude for China’s concern for overseas Chinese and said that as disseminators of Chinese culture, they should take every lesson well, and tell every story well. Meanwhile, as contemporary Chinese youth, they will stick to their unwavering commitment to accumulating teaching experience constantly, developing their abilities, improving themselves and enhancing their understanding of Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture so as to show a complete image of China to students in a firm and confident manner.

Wang Yuchen of the Southern Africa-China Technology and Education Association (SETEA) stated that he will deeply meditate on the Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and apply the knowledge and innovations learned abroad to the great cause of China’s economic development, striving for the building of a community of shared future for mankind and the realization of the great “two centenary goals”. As the hope of China’s development and the backbone of the future world, Chinese youth are to be a major force in the connectivity and win-win cooperation between China and Africa.

Wang Zhenyu, a Chinese language teacher of the Confucius Institute at University of Cape Town said that the teaching of General Secretary Xi Jinping is like a beacon that lights up their life path. China’s support allows them to move forward firmly during the study abroad, but the deepest sense of belonging can only be found in China. It will take generations of aspiring young people to continue their struggle to realize the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Taking the responsibility of bringing prosperity for China and happiness for the people, young people should vigorously forge ahead, actively participate in the great practice of socialism with Chinese characteristics and strive for it throughout their lives.

Wu Huaying, a volunteer Chinese language teacher of the Confucius Institute said that after reading the reply letter, he felt the responsibility and the mission became greater. He was determined to keep learning, enrich his mind, and combine theoretical studies with concrete practice to improve his own skills, making unremitting efforts to look for and innovate the ways of spreading Chinese culture.

Wu Shaowen, a volunteer Chinese language teacher, noted that the individual value cannot be realized without the community or the society, and in turn, the social development depends on the efforts and progresses made by numerous individuals. Nowadays, China has an even broader vision and Chinese youths are more broad-minded. We should not only stand out in the world, but also share our development and prosperity with other countries in the world. Though the road ahead seems to have no end, there is brightness and we enjoy it all the way. We always enjoy it.

As a postgraduate student majoring in Tourism and Hotel Management at Durban University of Technology in South Africa, Zhu Shanshan was much inspired by this reply letter and determined to either devote herself to her motherland after returning home or continue to promote China-South Africa exchanges in every aspect after graduation.

Yu Xiao is an overseas student of Durban University of Technology in South Africa and a staff member of the Confucius Institute. For the year of 2018, he has his plan in mind. He would like to make his own contributions to the development of China by actively helping the Confucius Institute to expand the activities and cultural and educational projects of various kinds to promote exchanges and friendship between the two peoples.

Zhang Yameng, a government-sponsored overseas doctoral student at the University of the Witwatersrand, said that although the life of studying alone abroad without delicious hometown dishes and the company of friends is tough, we must study hard and strive to serve our country as it provides such convenience for us to study abroad. We are also well aware that despite its prosperity and strength, China still lags behind in terms of many technologies and its image of backwardness in the eyes of many other countries has yet to be changed, which urges us to fulfill our unshakable duty of studying hard.

Chang Runlei and Li Jieqiong from the Association of China’s Scholars and Students in South Africa (ACSSSA) at the University of Pretoria said that as overseas students, they care their motherland as always and are proud of the booming development of China despite the fact that they are far away from it. While striving to learn specialized courses well, they will actively spread China’s fruitful achievements of rapid development to the students around them and contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation as well as the building of the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Fang Yunfei, a doctoral student majoring in Electronic Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology of South Africa said that in the new era, overseas students shoulder dual responsibilities, namely, studying abroad to serve their country and spreading culture. They must be modest yet confident people who do their deeds honestly, spread the fine value and culture of Chinese civilization and refuse to be corrupted by rotten thoughts.

Shen Jianqi from ACSSSA at the University of South Africa noted that the development histories of a country and a nation incorporate the struggle of young generations. Overseas students, also a group of Chinese young generation, are bound to walk to the front of the arena and take the responsibility of rejuvenating the country and the nation. The young generation must keep in mind the mission entrusted by the Party and the country and be strict with themselves to become new youths in the new era who have faith, pursuit and responsibility and live up to the expectations of times and the history.

Zhao Yao, a volunteer Chinese language teacher of the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University said that it is an honor for people living abroad to read the reply letter from General Secretary Xi Jinping. Every word from him reveals that he cares the overseas students. While teaching overseas, we not only need to complete the tasks of teaching and cultural communication, but also learn from the advanced scientific knowledge and teaching philosophies, thus improving both teaching and learning skills so as to become more capable to put my efforts in the fast developing education industry in China as early as possible.

Zang Li, a volunteer Chinese language teacher said that though she now works and lives in a foreign country, she can still feel the warmth of motherland. Sincere expectations and caring can be read between the lines in the reply letter. In the New Year, more time and efforts will be devoted to studies and research in order to contribute to the promising future of China. Bearing deep feelings, full enthusiasm and passion, all the Chinese teachers will be dedicated in overseas Chinese language classes with sense of responsibility, mission and honor”, thus living up to the expectations of China and striving to accomplish the mission of promoting Chinese language internationally in the new era.

Volunteer Chinese language teachers of the Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University said that in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, it is an honor to contribute to the communication and promotion of Chinese culture as Chinese language teachers. In the New Year, they will continue to spread Chinese culture, draw strength from it, actively promote the exchanges and mutual learning between Chinese and foreign cultures and help Chinese and foreign people understand the firm belief of peace and harmony long pursued by the Chinese nation, so as to contribute to the early realization of the Chinese Dream.

As volunteers of the Confucius Institute at Durban University of Technology, South Africa said, the year of 2018, marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Africa, will be full of hope. More South Africans are eager to know more about China and learn Chinese language. It is fortunate for them to witness this great moment and make contributions.
